Clients pay you to create an image to illustrate a message. Either to a specific brief or they trust you to simply create what inspires you according to a theme or message.
Sometimes clients just buy an image you already have taken and they create an ad around that...which is nice of course. Nearly all the ads you see referenced below were assignments. The exception was the Kodak tree on the hill image. That was a stock image shot in South Australia, and yes, it was actually taken on Kodachrome
